Fit for a First Lady is a fashion export business reality TV show that aims to empower African fashion designers and integrate them into regional and global fashion value chains. Through practical, export-focused business challenges, the show incorporates relevant UK industry regulations and standards, equipping contestants with the knowledge to develop commercially viable, export-ready fashion brands. Combining education with entertainment, Fit for a First Lady falls within the edutainment genre.
Fit for a First Lady follows six African fashion designers from six different countries as they navigate real-world fashion design and export business challenges. Each contestant must create a unique, African-inspired garment for the First Lady of their country to wear at a symbolic Royal Diplomatic Ball in the UK. Designing for each First Lady carries symbolic significance, reflecting national identity, cultural heritage and diplomatic pride. Contestants must demonstrate the ability to translate these values into designs that are both fit for purpose and commercially viable.

In addition to export skills development, Fit for a First Lady champions access to finance as a catalyst for growth, innovation, and economic empowerment in Africa’s fashion industry. Through the competition’s £10,000 grand prize, Fit for a First Lady provides the winning contestant with financial support to develop their fashion business, scale operations, and contribute to the growth of Africa’s creative economy.
Season One marks the beginning of an initiative to equip African fashion designers with the practical knowledge and skills needed to navigate the fashion export business. Through real-world design and business challenges, the inaugural season pushes six designers to go beyond creativity, developing their understanding of market demand, export requirements and international standards. It highlights the importance of combining design talent with business readiness to build commercially viable fashion brands capable of competing in regional and global markets.
